Steps

1. 1Activate Lazav by paying , choosing to have it become a copy of Safehold Elite if it doesn't have a -1/-1 counter on it, or Strangleroot Geist otherwise.
2. 2Activate Ashnod's Altar by sacrificing Lazav, adding .
3. 3When Lazav dies, if it was a copy of Safehold Elite, its persist ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.
4. 4Otherwise, Lazav's undying ability triggers, returning it from your graveyard to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it.
5. 5When Lazav enters the battlefield, it triggers, causing you to surveil 1.
6. 6Repeat.
